Spanish Horizons in the Community

Not only do we strive to help our students, both adults and children, flourish through their education in the Spanish language, but we are also working with several organizations in Wichita to enrich life for the Hispanic community.

We are currently working with the Hispanic Task Force at Exploration Place, the HETA project for the Department of Aging, and Envision.

Spanish Horizons is a part of the Hispanic Task Force at Exploration Place in Wichita, Kansas. The purpose of the Hispanic Task Force is to make Exploratino Place welcoming to teh very diverse cultures that are found here in Wichita. As a part of the task force, we are working to help make it a comfortable place for people of different ethnic groups and languages. We feel very honored to be a part of this very relevant projet in today's multi-cultural world.

Spanish Horizons has also been involved with the HETA (Hispanic Elder Transportation Access) project for the Department of Aging. The goal of this project is to improve access to public transportation among Hispanic elders in Sedgwick county. This project is managed by Valerhy Powers, the Director of Transportation and Physical Disabilities of the Central Plains Area Department on Aging.

Our interpreter has assisted with interpretation at the seven focus groups held in Sedgwick County, at the community forum on August 3, 2011 where different organizations and the public gathered to develop strategies for how to address the issues identified in the focus groups and in the surveys. She has also assisted Valerhy Powers with gathering of information. In addition to interpretation, she translated surveys, flyers, and informational handouts to help the HETA project bridge the language barrier.
